Mediclinic maternity ward visiting hours are managed flexibly rather than set as short fixed slots. Mediclinic Southern Africa’s published visiting policy lists managed visiting from 09:00 to 20:00 with a rest period from 13:00 to 15:00, and lets a well partner board with the mother where facilities allow. Other hospitals set their own maternity ward visiting hours, so confirm with the unit before you travel.

What Are Maternity Ward Visiting Hours?

Maternity ward visiting hours are the times when family and friends may see a mother and newborn in the postnatal (maternity) ward. Most hospitals separate two groups: the birth partner or father, who usually gets much longer access, and other visitors, who follow shorter set windows. The labour ward is stricter again, and normally admits only the designated birth partner.

Mediclinic maternity ward visiting hours

Mediclinic’s group policy on flexible visiting hours says managed flexible visiting applies from 09:00 to 20:00 with a 13:00–15:00 resting period, and that for obstetric patients a well partner may accompany and board with the patient if facilities are available, or visit once a day for an unlimited time. Its Obstetric Unit booklet adds that flexible visiting is managed by the nursing practitioners in charge of each unit, and that only the husband or partner is allowed in the labour unit or theatre. The individual Mediclinic hospital pages we checked (for example Sandton, Cape Town and Bloemfontein) do not list a separate maternity schedule, so ask the obstetric unit at your hospital how it applies the policy. The group policy page still mentions COVID-19 screening and masks, which is another reason to confirm current requirements.

For labour ward visiting hours specifically, the published rules focus on who, not when: Mowbray Maternity Hospital states a designated birth partner is always allowed in the labour suite, and Lenmed’s maternity information says your husband or birthing partner is welcome to stay with you during labour. Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital asks that partner support in theatre or labour be arranged with your doctor or the hospital.

Why Ward Visiting Hours Can Differ

Maternity units protect newborns as well as recovering mothers, so they often run different rules from the general wards in the same building. Mediclinic’s booklet explains that access to the Obstetric Unit is strictly controlled for the safety of mothers and babies. Netcare’s hospital stay guidance says visiting times, restrictions and resting times may differ between hospitals and between wards, and tells mothers to contact the maternity unit to find out its visiting times and who may visit. Feeding times, doctors’ rounds, rest periods and room layout (private room versus shared ward) all shape the final schedule.

Typical Visitor Restrictions

These restrictions appear in the official pages we reviewed. They are examples, not rules for every hospital:

  • Visitors may be asked to leave during procedures, and phones should be on silent (Mediclinic Sandton).
  • Anyone who is ill, or has been exposed to illness in the past two weeks, is discouraged from visiting (Life West Coast Private Hospital).
  • Some units let only the partner in during the long window and send everyone else to set visiting slots (Life Hilton, Life Kingsbury, Life Wilgers).
  • Netcare asks visitors to wash or sanitise their hands before and after visits (Netcare hospital stay page).
  • Mothers should not leave the baby alone in the room and should report anyone acting suspiciously (Mediclinic Obstetric Unit booklet).

Weekend & Public Holiday Visits

None of the maternity schedules above list separate weekend or public-holiday times, which suggests the same daily windows apply, but that is not stated outright, so ask the unit. Some public hospitals publish daily hours that explicitly include weekends: the Gauteng Department of Health announced that Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital moved to 13:00–15:00 daily, including weekends, from 1 September 2025. Children and Number of Visitors

  • Mediclinic group policy: up to three visitors per bed in general wards; children must be well supervised.
  • Life Kingsbury Hospital and Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital: only the patient’s own children may visit the maternity ward.
  • Life St George’s Hospital: only siblings allowed.
  • Life West Coast Private Hospital: fathers/partners and siblings 10:00–22:00; no other children under 12.
  • Life Fourways Hospital: siblings may visit from 15:00 to 16:00.
  • Netcare Greenacres Hospital (April 2022 notice): no children under 12 in the maternity ward; two visitors per patient.
  • Life Hilton Private Hospital: a maximum of two visitors per patient at a time.

What to Bring

If you are the one being admitted, Mediclinic’s booklet lists cool front-buttoning pyjamas, a dressing gown and slippers, loose underwear and feeding bras, toiletries including two dark face cloths, two packs of sanitary towels, nipple cream and breast pads, plus your identity document, medical aid card and a black pen. It asks you to leave jewellery and large sums of money at home. Your own hospital may send its own list, so check it too.

If you are visiting, bring the mother’s full name and ward, keep the visit short, sanitise your hands, and ask the staff before bringing gifts, flowers or food into the unit.

How to Confirm the Current Schedule

  • Find the exact hospital page in our hospital visiting hours directory or search for hospitals near you.
  • Phone the hospital switchboard and ask to be put through to the maternity or obstetric unit itself, not only reception, because ward rules can differ from general visiting hours.
  • Ask three things: today’s visiting windows (including any rest or handover periods), how many visitors may be at the bedside, and whether children are allowed.
  • Ask whether weekend or public-holiday arrangements are different, and whether you need to be on a named visitor list.
  • Check the hospital’s own website visitor page on the day, since group pages can be updated without notice.
