Hospital Visiting Hours Near Me

Location guideLast verified 13 September 2026

Searching for hospital visiting hours near me? Start with the name of the hospital closest to you: every hospital sets its own visiting times, and wards within one hospital can differ. Search our visiting hours directory below, open that hospital’s page for its verified details, and confirm with the ward or switchboard before you leave home.

Choose a hospital or guide: type the hospital’s name into the search box, or pick a province, group or ward guide below to get the most specific visiting information.

Find Visiting Hours

This page does not detect your location. To find visiting hours at a hospital near you, search by the hospital’s name, browse by province, or start from the group that runs it:

  • Know the hospital’s name? Type part of it (for example “Tembisa” or “Unitas”) and open the matching page.
  • Only know the area? Browse a location hub such as Gauteng hospital visiting hours, where facilities are grouped by area.
  • Know the operator? Open its group hub, listed under Visiting Hours by Hospital Type below.
  • Not sure whether it is public or private? Check the hospital’s signage, admission papers or website, then use the matching hub.

Before you search, have a few details ready: the hospital’s full name and town, the patient’s full name, and the ward or unit they were admitted to. Several hospitals share similar names in different towns, and some are also known by former names, so check the town on the hospital page matches the one near you. If the patient has just been admitted through casualty, ask staff which ward they will move to, because ward visiting times may differ from the emergency department.

Visiting Hours by Hospital Type

Public hospitals are run by provincial health departments, and schedules are set per hospital. Private hospitals follow group policies that are adjusted per facility. Use the hub that matches the hospital near you:

Schedules vary widely even within one province. Three official examples from Gauteng show why you should not rely on another hospital’s times:

Ward & Unit Visiting Hours

Once you have found the hospital, check which ward the patient is in. Critical care, maternity and neonatal units commonly publish separate times or stricter limits. For example, Mediclinic Sandton lists ICU and high care visiting from 11:00–20:00, while Busamed Modderfontein lists separate maternity and NICU times. Our ward guides explain what to ask:

Weekend & Public Holiday Guidance

Some hospitals state that weekend times are the same as weekdays. The Gauteng Department of Health, for instance, said Chris Hani Baragwanath’s new window applies on weekends too. Many hospital pages say nothing about public holidays, so treat holiday visiting as unconfirmed until the ward tells you otherwise. See weekend hospital visiting hours for a checklist.

Visitor Rules

Rules on visitor numbers, children and behaviour are set by each hospital. Published examples include:

  • Mediclinic Sandton asks for no more than three visitors per bed in general wards and two per bed in critical care units.
  • Busamed Modderfontein allows two visitors per patient per visit in general wards and ICU/high care, and no children under 12 in those areas.
  • The Chris Hani Baragwanath statement notes special arrangements for paediatric, critical care and end-of-life patients.

For general etiquette, infection control and what to bring, read the hospital visiting rules guide.

Before you travel: hospitals near you can change visiting times after reviews, outbreaks or security incidents. Confirm on the day with the ward.

How to Verify Current Hours

  • Official hospital or group page. Netcare facility pages include a “Visitor information” tab, and Mediclinic hospital websites have a “Stay & Visit” page.
  • Provincial health department. Public hospital changes may be announced in department media statements, as Gauteng Health did for Chris Hani Baragwanath.
  • Switchboard. Call the hospital’s main number (listed on its official website) and ask to be put through to the ward.
  • Ward direct line. Ask for the ward’s number at admission so you can check before each visit.
  • Last-verified date. Our facility pages show when details were checked. If a date is old, phone first.

Avoid relying on unofficial listings or social media posts: Gauteng Health has had to correct misleading claims about visiting hours in the past.
