Ward & Unit Visiting Hours
Intensive care, maternity and neonatal units often run different hours from general wards. Examples from official Gauteng hospital pages:
- Busamed Modderfontein lists maternity and NICU visiting at 11:00–12:00, 15:00–16:00 and 19:00–20:00, with grandparents and siblings of the newborn able to visit by prior arrangement with management.
- Mediclinic Sandton lists ICU and high care visiting from 11:00–20:00 and asks visitors to check at the nurses’ station whether a patient can receive visitors.
- The Gauteng Department of Health says Chris Hani Baragwanath makes special arrangements for paediatric patients, critical care and end-of-life situations.

Weekend & Public Holiday Guidance
Only some Gauteng hospitals say whether weekend times differ. The Gauteng Department of Health’s statement for Chris Hani Baragwanath specifies that its 13:00–15:00 window includes weekends. The Mediclinic Sandton and Busamed Modderfontein pages we checked do not mention public holiday changes, so confirm with the ward before visiting on a public holiday. Visitor Rules
Visitor limits are also hospital-specific. Published examples:
- Mediclinic Sandton asks visitors to limit numbers to three per bed in general wards and two per bed in critical care units, and one person may accompany a day-procedure patient.
- Busamed Modderfontein allows two visitors per patient per visit in general wards and ICU/high care, with no children under 12 in these areas.
- Visitors may be asked to leave the bedside during procedures (Mediclinic Sandton).

How to Verify Current Hours
- Check the hospital’s own website or group facility page (Netcare facility pages have a “Visitor information” tab; Mediclinic hospital sites have a “Stay & Visit” page).
- For public hospitals, look for Gauteng Department of Health media statements on gauteng.gov.za, which is where the Chris Hani Baragwanath change was announced.
- Phone the hospital switchboard and ask for the ward, especially for ICU, maternity or isolation units.
- Ask the ward for its direct number when the patient is admitted, so you can check before each visit.
