Hospital Weekend Visiting Hours

Weekend guideLast verified 13 September 2026

Hospital visiting hours on Sunday, Saturday and public holidays are set by each hospital, not by a national rule. Many South African hospitals publish one daily timetable that includes weekends, while others do not mention weekends at all. This guide shows what official sources actually say about weekend visiting and how to confirm Sunday hospital visiting hours before you travel.

Find your hospital: choose a hospital or guide to get the most specific visiting information. If the page does not mention weekends, phone the ward first.

Find Visiting Hours

Search for the hospital you plan to visit this weekend. Each facility page notes whether the source mentions weekends or public holidays. You can also browse the full visiting hours directory, the public hospital visiting hours list or the private hospital visiting hours list.

When you phone a hospital to check Sunday or public holiday visiting, have the patient’s full name and ward or unit ready, and ask three things: whether weekend times differ from weekdays, how many visitors are allowed at the bedside, and whether children may visit. This avoids a wasted trip if the ward has its own arrangements.

Popular Hospitals

These hospitals have official sources that we checked for weekend visiting information:

  • Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital: Gauteng Health says visiting times include weekends.
  • Addington Hospital: KZN Health lists visiting Monday to Sunday.
  • Osindisweni Hospital: KZN Health lists visiting every day, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Ethekwini Hospital: Lenmed lists general ward times as daily.

Facility pages for this section are being verified and will appear here as they are published. In the meantime, use the hospital visiting hours directory.

Visiting Hours by Hospital Type

Public and private hospitals handle weekends differently, and the only reliable answer is the hospital’s own published schedule.

Hospital (example only)TypeWhat the source says about weekends
Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic HospitalPublicDaily 13:00–15:00, including weekends (from 1 September 2025)

Mediclinic (group guideline)Private09:00–20:00 with a 13:00–15:00 rest period; no separate weekend times listed
Sources: Gauteng Department of Health, KZN Department of Health, Lenmed, Mediclinic Southern Africa (checked 13 September 2026). Examples apply only to the facility or group named.

Several private hospital pages we checked, including Life Wilgers, Life Flora and Life East London Private Hospital, list visiting times without any weekend or public holiday note. That does not mean visiting stops on weekends; it means you should confirm with the hospital.

Ward & Unit Visiting Hours

Weekend visiting in specialised units follows the unit’s own rules. Examples from official pages: Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre lists NICU and PICU visiting at 15:00–17:00 daily, and Port Shepstone Hospital lists its labour and maternity ward at 14:00–16:00. Gauteng Health notes that paediatric, critical care and end-of-life visits at Chris Hani Baragwanath are managed by clinical teams. Before a Sunday visit to one of these units, check our guides:

Weekend & Public Holiday Guidance

Saturday

Where a hospital lists its times as “daily” or “Monday to Sunday”, Saturday times match weekdays. None of the official sources we checked published a Saturday-only schedule, so if your hospital’s page is unclear, phone ahead.

Sunday

If several family members plan to visit together on a Sunday, check the visitor limit first. Mediclinic asks for no more than two visitors per bed in general and critical care units, and Osindisweni Hospital allows three people at a bedside at a time.

Public holidays

Of the sources we checked, only Osindisweni Hospital’s KZN Health page explicitly says its visiting times apply on public holidays. For other hospitals, confirm before visiting on a public holiday, as the official pages do not say whether times change.

Visitor Rules

The visitor rules in the official sources we checked do not make exceptions for weekends. Lenmed’s patient and visitor handbook says children under 12 may not visit and asks visitors to stay home if sick and wash hands before and after visiting. Osindisweni Hospital asks visitors to tell the sister in charge whom they are visiting and to declare any items brought for the patient. See our hospital visitor rules guide for the full checklist.

How to Verify Current Hours

  • Look for the words “daily”, “Monday to Sunday” or “including weekends” on the official hospital or health department page.
  • Do not rely on operating hours. A hospital listed as open 24 hours, as on Western Cape Government facility listings, still has set visiting times.
  • Check for recent changes. Chris Hani Baragwanath moved its daily visiting time from 14:00–16:00 to 13:00–15:00 in September 2025.
  • Phone the ward on Friday or the morning of your visit, especially before a public holiday.
