Melomed hospital visiting hours are published per hospital, and most Melomed hospitals list an afternoon and an evening session with the same times on weekends and public holidays. Melomed Richards Bay follows a different timetable, and Melomed runs a structured “visitation programme” with strict bedside limits. Melomed’s website lists six facilities in two provinces. Search by name, or open a hospital page:

General Visitor Policy

Melomed’s FAQ describes a “Visitation Programme” designed to keep wards quiet and conducive to healing. It states:

  • strictly two visitors per bedside at any time in all wards, with exceptions only by prior arrangement
  • no children under 12, except siblings in the maternity unit or by special arrangement
  • the visiting hour is split into 4 x 15-minute or 6 x 10-minute sessions, allowing a maximum of 8 or 12 visitors per patient per visiting session
  • additional visitors wait their turn in the foyer or reception area, and an SMS time reminder is sent to the cellphone number given on entry
  • time sessions increase when there are fewer visitors than the allocation

ICU, Maternity & Special Unit Visits

  • ICU: Melomed’s FAQ says ICU visitors may go directly to the ICU waiting area, where their visit will be managed. No separate ICU visiting times are published on the hospital pages, so ask the unit.
  • Maternity: the FAQ limits maternity visitation strictly to the father, siblings and grandparents, while keeping the two-visitors-per-bedside rule. Siblings are the stated exception to the under-12 rule.
  • Neonatal ICU: Melomed’s Melobabes FAQ says fathers are welcome to visit their baby in NICU as soon as possible after admission. Parents are welcome all day except 07:00–10:30, or until doctors’ rounds are finished, when the unit is closed for privacy. Daytime parent visiting is listed as 10:30–18:00 and 19:15–22:00, and parents may be asked to wait during an admission or emergency procedure.

Weekend & Public Holiday Visiting

Melomed Bellville, Mitchells Plain and Tokai list the same visiting hours on weekends and public holidays as on weekdays: 15:00–16:00 and 19:15–20:15. Melomed Claremont also keeps its weekday times (15:00–16:00 and 19:00–20:00). Melomed Richards Bay is the exception, with a longer afternoon session on weekends and public holidays: 10:00–11:00, 14:00–16:00 and 19:00–20:00. Melomed Gatesville’s page did not list weekend times. Melomed lists its 24-hour emergency line as 0800 786 000 and its head office in Kenilworth, Cape Town, as 021 699 0950.

Visitor Rules

  • Keep to two visitors at the bedside and return to the foyer as soon as your time slot ends: Melomed’s FAQ makes monitoring time the visitor’s responsibility.
  • Give a cellphone number at entry so you receive the SMS time reminder.
  • Do not bring children under 12 unless they are a new baby’s siblings in maternity or you have a special arrangement.
  • Arrange any exception to the visitor limit with the hospital in advance.
  • Melomed advises patients to leave valuables at home and says it cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen items.

  • For Melomed Gatesville, where no visiting times were published, always phone first.
  • For ICU, NICU or maternity, ask the unit directly about current access and any procedures that may delay your visit.
  • Check the hospital’s page on melomed.co.za for updates, as Melomed has noted that its website is being upgraded.
