NICU visiting hours usually treat parents very differently from everyone else. Many neonatal intensive care units give parents open or extended access and limit or exclude other visitors: Mowbray Maternity Hospital lists unrestricted access for parents, with grandparents and siblings by arrangement, while some private hospitals set fixed windows. Confirm your unit’s rules directly, as they vary widely.

What Are NICU Visiting Hours?

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) cares for premature and sick newborns. NICU visiting hours set out when parents, and sometimes grandparents or siblings, may be with the baby. Because parents are part of the baby’s care, many units describe parents as having open access rather than visiting hours, while still asking families to step out during handovers, procedures or quiet time.

Mediclinic’s group visiting policy does not give separate NICU times; it limits critical care units to two visitors per bed and treats a paediatric patient and one parent as a single unit. Its Obstetric Unit booklet explains that babies admitted to the neonatal unit get an extra identification sticker for security, and that where possible parents may accompany their baby for procedures or tests.

Why Ward Visiting Hours Can Differ

Newborns in intensive care are highly vulnerable to infection, and the unit’s space around each incubator is limited. That is why some hospitals allow only parents, why others set windows around nursing handovers and quiet time (as Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital does), and why rules can change during outbreaks. Units also differ in how they support Kangaroo Mother Care, the practice of holding the baby skin to skin: Mowbray Maternity Hospital says parents are encouraged to do Kangaroo Mother Care, with other visitors by arrangement. Mothers who are still admitted after the birth may also have different access from fathers or partners.

Typical Visitor Restrictions

  • No children, siblings or other family members (Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital nursery and NICU).
  • Visits discouraged for anyone who is ill, has been ill or was exposed to illness in the past two weeks (Life Kingsbury Hospital).
  • Limited to immediate family in high-care units (Mowbray Maternity Hospital).
  • No children under 12 in specialised units including NICU (Netcare Greenacres Hospital notice, April 2022).
  • Hand washing or sanitising before and after visits (Netcare).

Weekend & Public Holiday Visits

Where parents have open or unrestricted access, weekends are normally no different for parents, but check this with your unit. Rules for other relatives can change on weekends: Life Kingsbury Hospital allows grandparents only on weekends between 15:00 and 16:00, at the registered nurse’s discretion.   • Life Wilgers Hospital and Life Carstenhof Hospital: two family members per patient; children under 12 not permitted in ICUs, including neonatal ICU.
  • Mowbray Maternity Hospital: siblings and grandparents by arrangement only.
  • Ethekwini Private Hospital & Heart Centre: both parents; grandparents on the day of admission only.
  • Mediclinic: two visitors per bed in critical care units.

What to Bring

Ask the NICU what you may bring before your first visit, as infection rules often limit personal items at the incubator. Useful things to have with you are your ID and the baby’s admission details, a comfortable front-opening top if you plan to do skin-to-skin care, and any expressed breast milk labelled as the unit instructs. Leave jewellery at home if you will be handling your baby, and keep your phone on silent.

How to Confirm the Current Schedule

  • Find the exact hospital page in our hospital visiting hours directory or search for hospitals near you.
  • Phone the hospital switchboard and ask to be put through to the neonatal unit (NICU) itself, not only reception, because ward rules can differ from general visiting hours.
  • Ask three things: today’s visiting windows (including any rest or handover periods), how many visitors may be at the bedside, and whether children are allowed.
  • Ask whether weekend or public-holiday arrangements are different, and whether you need to be on a named visitor list.
  • Check the hospital’s own website visitor page on the day, since group pages can be updated without notice.
  • Ask whether grandparents or siblings need to be added to a visitor list, and whether Kangaroo Mother Care times are set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can both parents visit the NICU at the same time?

At several hospitals, yes: Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital, Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital and Ethekwini Private Hospital & Heart Centre all say both parents may visit together. Other units may allow one parent at the cot at a time, so ask.

Can grandparents visit a baby in the NICU?
