Hospital Visiting Rules

What time do visiting hours start at hospitals? In South Africa there is no single national answer. Each hospital, and often each ward, sets its own times. Mediclinic’s group guidance, for example, allows visiting between 09:00 and 20:00 with a rest period, while other hospitals use short sessions. Check the exact hospital in our visiting hours directory, then use the rules below to plan your visit.

General Hospital Visitor Rules

Hospital visiting hours exist to balance patient support with rest, treatment and infection control. The published policies we checked share several rules, even though the times differ:

• Times vary by hospital and ward. Netcare says visiting times, restrictions and resting times may differ between hospitals and between wards in the same hospital, and asks visitors to check the hospital’s web page, the ward notice board or the unit manager.
• Report to the ward. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health’s patient information for Osindisweni Hospital asks visitors to tell the sister in charge whom they are visiting.
• Staff can ask you to step out. Mediclinic and Netcare both say visitors may be asked to leave the bedside while procedures are carried out.
• No smoking or firearms. Netcare hospitals do not allow smoking inside the hospital (only in designated smoking areas), and no firearms are permitted on Netcare premises. Pets are not allowed.

These examples show how much normal hospital visiting hours differ from one facility to another:

So how long are visiting hours in hospital? Anything from a 30-minute session to most of the day, depending on where the patient is admitted.

When Visiting Hours Change

Published times are not always the final word. Mediclinic states that its visiting arrangements are subject to change without prior notice, and that there may be times when visitors cannot be accommodated, so visitors should ask at the nurses’ station whether the patient can receive visitors. Mediclinic also says visitors may be asked to leave when doctors discuss a diagnosis.

Ward managers often have discretion. Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital says family visits to critically ill patients may be allowed through special arrangement with the hospital manager. At Osindisweni Hospital, patients who can walk may, with the sister in charge’s permission, meet visitors in the ground-floor visitors’ waiting room. Restrictions can also tighten during outbreaks, as they did across hospital groups during COVID-19.

Children & Visitor Limits

Children

Rules on children are among the strictest. Netcare says that, in line with Department of Health infection control regulations, children under 12 may not visit paediatric patients, and may not visit patients in intensive or high care units. Osindisweni Hospital does not allow children under 12 in its wards unless the sister in charge gives special permission. Mediclinic asks visitors to make sure any children with them are well supervised. Life Wilgeheuwel does not allow children, siblings or other family members in its nursery and neonatal ICU.

Number of visitors

• Mediclinic: the group’s visitor information page lists two visitors per bed in general units and in critical care, and one person accompanying a day-procedure patient. Mediclinic’s separate flexible visiting hours page lists three per bed in general wards, so ask the individual hospital which limit applies.
• Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital: two visitors per day per patient in general wards.
• Lenmed Wilmed Park: two visitors at a bed at any one time, although visitors may take turns. Pre- and post-operative patients may have one visitor.
• Osindisweni Hospital: three people at the bedside at any time.

ICU, Maternity & Special Units

• ICU: Netcare allows only two visitors at a time, asks that only immediate family visit, and says visitors must get permission from ICU staff and tell staff when they enter. Life Wilgeheuwel allows two visitors per patient per day in adult ICUs at set times.
• Maternity: Mediclinic says a well partner may stay with the patient if facilities are available, or visit once a day for an unlimited time. Netcare says partners may room in by arrangement and asks you to check with the maternity unit who may visit and when.
• Paediatrics: Mediclinic treats a child patient and one parent as a single unit, and says one parent or caregiver stays with the child on a single sleeper couch (extra costs may apply). Life Wilgeheuwel lets one parent stay overnight with a child in the paediatric ward or ICU.
• NICU and nursery: Lenmed Wilmed Park lists its NICU as parents only. Life Wilgeheuwel lets parents visit together between 08:00 and 20:00, except during nurse handovers and quiet time.

Infection Control & Patient Rest

Infection prevention is a major reason hospitals have visiting hours. Netcare urges patients and visitors to wash or sanitise their hands before and after visits, using the hand rub placed around its hospitals on arrival and departure. Relatives of patients with infectious conditions are asked to follow infection control measures. Mediclinic says visitors must go through screening and will not be allowed in if they are considered a risk. If you are unwell, ask the ward before visiting.

Rest periods protect recovery. Mediclinic’s guidance sets a rest period from 13:00 to 15:00, and Life Wilgeheuwel asks visitors to keep noise low during the same hours. Netcare asks visitors not to visit during a hospital’s official resting period. Mediclinic Panorama asks visitors to put phones on silent and keep the volume down.

Gifts, Food & Personal Items

• Flowers: Netcare does not permit flowers in the ICU. Other units and hospitals may have their own rules, so ask before bringing flowers.
• Food: at Osindisweni Hospital, food brought by relatives must be declared to the sister before the patient eats it, and visitors must declare any items brought for the patient. Patients may be on special diets, so check with the nurses first.
• Valuables: Netcare advises patients not to bring valuables to hospital and says it will not accept claims for lost items. Safes are available at most of its hospitals through ward staff and security.

How to Confirm Before You Travel

• Find out the exact hospital and ward or unit the patient is in.
• Check the hospital’s official web page or notice for that ward’s visiting times, including weekend changes.
• Call the ward or nurses’ station to ask whether the patient can have visitors today, how many may visit, and whether children are allowed.
• Ask about flowers, food and gifts before you bring them.
• Stay at home if you are ill, and sanitise your hands on arrival and when you leave.
