Akeso Hospital Visiting Hours
Hospital groupLast verified 13 September 2026
Akeso visiting hours are not the same as general hospital visiting hours. Netcare Akeso runs acute psychiatric facilities, and its facility pages state that only visitors approved by programme management may visit, with times set by each treatment programme. This hub lists the 16 Akeso clinics currently published by Netcare, explains how visiting works, and links to facility pages in our visiting hours directory.
Choose an Akeso hospital: pick the clinic below to see facility-specific visiting information. Visiting at Akeso depends on the patient’s programme and on approval by the treatment team, so always confirm with the clinic’s main reception before you travel.
Find an Akeso Hospital
Akeso is the mental health division of Netcare, and its clinics are listed on the Netcare website as acute psychiatric hospitals. Search by clinic or town, or browse the province list further down this page. If you are looking for Akeso clinic visiting hours for a specific town, start with the facility page, then phone the clinic to confirm.

General Visitor Policy
Every Akeso facility page on netcare.co.za carries the same group-level visiting note: only visitors approved by programme management are allowed to visit patients, visiting times follow programme rules, and families should enquire at the main reception. In practice this means:
- Visiting is by approval, not open access. The treatment team decides who may visit, so do not assume you can arrive unannounced.
- Times differ by programme. Adult general psychiatry, dual diagnosis (addiction), eating disorder and adolescent programmes at the same clinic often have separate visiting windows.
- Visiting windows are short and few. Most published Akeso schedules list one to three slots a week rather than daily visiting.
The examples below show how much schedules vary. They apply only to the facility and programme named.
| Facility and programme | Published visiting times |
|---|---|
| Akeso Nelspruit: adult general psychiatry and adult dual diagnosis/addiction | Tuesday and Thursday 18:00–19:00; Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 14:00–16:00 |
| Akeso Randburg: adult general psychiatry | Saturday 14:00–16:30 |
| Akeso Randburg: adult dual diagnosis/addiction, adult eating disorder and all adolescent programmes | Sunday 10:00–12:30; public holidays 14:00–15:00 |
| Akeso Pietermaritzburg: adult general psychiatry | Sunday 09:00–15:45 (45 minutes per visitor) |
| Akeso Montrose Manor: adult eating disorder | Saturday and Sunday afternoons, by appointment only |
ICU, Maternity & Special Unit Visits
Akeso clinics are psychiatric facilities, so there are no ICU, maternity, labour or neonatal units. The programmes Netcare lists across Akeso are adult and adolescent general psychiatry, dual diagnosis/addiction, eating disorders, psycho-geriatric care, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and high care units. For medical hospital wards, see our ICU visiting hours guide or maternity ward visiting guide.
High care units
Two clinics publish separate high care visiting slots. Akeso Kenilworth lists Wednesday 19:15–20:15 and Saturday and Sunday 15:00–16:00. Akeso Parktown lists Saturday 15:00–16:00. Patients in high care are usually acutely unwell, so check with the unit before visiting.
Adolescent and eating disorder programmes
Adolescent programmes often have their own times. Akeso Kenilworth Adolescents/Young Adults (KAYA) lists Sunday 14:00–16:15, and Akeso Milnerton lists Thursday 16:00–17:00 and Sunday 14:00–16:00 for its adolescent programmes. Montrose Manor, the group’s dedicated eating disorder facility, allows weekend afternoon visits by appointment only.
Weekend & Public Holiday Visiting
Weekends are the main visiting time at most Akeso clinics, and some clinics publish no weekday slots at all. Public holiday visiting is only listed at some facilities, for example Akeso Nelspruit (14:00–16:00), Akeso Richards Bay (11:00–12:30 and 15:00–17:00) and Akeso Arcadia (set wards only). Where a schedule shows no public holiday slot, ask the clinic whether visiting is allowed that day. Our weekend hospital visiting hours hub covers other hospitals.

Visitor Rules
Beyond visiting approval, Netcare Akeso’s admissions information sets out items that are restricted in its facilities. Keep these in mind if you are bringing things for a patient:
- Do not bring anything that contains alcohol, including toiletries.
- Sharp objects must be handed in at the nursing station.
- Cellphones are allowed in certain units but may be restricted under the facility’s rules.
- Follow any visitor limits the clinic sets. Akeso Pietermaritzburg, for example, allows 45 minutes per visitor.
For general etiquette that applies to most hospitals, read our hospital visiting rules guide.
How to Confirm Current Visiting Hours
- Open the clinic’s page on the Netcare Akeso facility finder and select Visitor information to see times for each programme.
- Phone the clinic’s main reception and ask whether you are on the patient’s approved visitor list, which programme the patient is in, and when that programme’s visiting slot is.
- Ask about public holidays separately, as many schedules do not list them.
- For urgent mental health concerns rather than visiting queries, Netcare Akeso publishes a 24-hour crisis line: 0861 435 787.
Before you visit an Akeso clinic: choose the facility page, then confirm with reception that you are an approved visitor and that the programme’s visiting slot has not changed.
